How To Play With DOS Games Under XP/Vista - With D-Fend?
DOSBox is a great program, really, but you must use a lot of prompt and each time before you play you must type a bit. I will show you an easier method through the installation of Stonekeep.
First, you must download D-Fend. Go here and download both D-Fend-Reloaded-0.7.0-Setup.exe and D-Fend-Reloaded-0.7.0-UpdateSetup.exe. This version of D-Fend contains DOSBox.
If you keep the default settings D-Fend sets the mounted C:\ here: C:\Documents and Settings\*\D-Fend Reloaded. Your games will be automatically installed to this directory: C:\Documents and Settings\*\D-Fend Reloaded\VirtualHD.
Start D-Fend Reloaded. You will see a DOSBox profile added automatically under name "DOSBox DOS". Right click on it and choose edit. In the "Profile editor" go to the "Drives" on the left. You can see that D-Fend automatically mounted your C:\ for DOS games to *.\VirtualHD\. But there is no CDROM Drive mounted. We must mount one because we don't want to type anything every time before running a game. Now, click "Add".
Type: CD-drive
Cd drive mounting type: Mount fixed path
Folder for mounting: Choose the drive where your Stonekeep CD is
Access method: Normal CDROM access via MSCDEX
Drive letter: D
Click "OK" twice. Now, you have mounted both C:\ and CDROM drive. Let us install Stonekeep.
Double click on "DOSBox DOS". DOSBox is started. If you can read the following, then everything is alright:
- Drive C is mounted as local directory C:\Documents and Settings\*\D-Fend Reloaded\VirtualHD
- Drive D is mounted as CDRom X:\
Note: x = this is the cdrom drive where your Stonekeep CD is
Type:
D:\
install
Now the instalation of Stonekeep will begin. Chosse "Full install". The "Verifying copied files" part takes some time, simply be patient and let the program finish its work.
Now, begin the sound setup.
Digital:
Select SOUNDBLASTER 16/AWE32, port 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1
Music:
Select SOUNDBLASTER Pro/16 PAS16(OPL3)
Exit and save.
Stonekeep will be here: C:\Documents and Settings\*\D-Fend Reloaded\VirtualHD\INTRPLAY\STONKEEP
Now, in the D-Fend Reloaded window choose Pofile\Add. Do the following:
Profile name = Stonekeep
Program file = Search for SK.BAT in this directory: C:\Documents and Settings\*\D-Fend Reloaded\VirtualHD\INTRPLAY\STONKEEP
Choose "Mouse" from the left menu.
Mouse sensitivity = Set to "80"
Choose Drives from the left menu.
If you don't see your CDROM mounted here for Stonekeep. Then you must click "Add".
Type: CD-drive
Cd drive mounting type: Mount fixed path
Folder for mounting: Choose the drive where your Stonekeep CD is
Access method: Normal CDROM access via MSCDEX
Drive letter: D
Click "OK" twice.
Now you have the second D-Fend profile. Under "DOSBox DOS" you have "Stonekeep". Right click on it and choose "Create shortcut...". Click on "OK". Close D-Fend.
Go to your desktop and you can see you have a Stonekeep shortcut. Now change the icon image. Righ click on the shortcut and search for the stonekeep.ico file what is located here: X:\IDATA\STONEKEEP.ICO. Note: x = this is the cdrom drive where your Stonekeep CD is. Click "OK" and you have a nice Stonekeep shortcut as in the good old days.
If you want to play with Stonekeep you don't have to start DOSBox, you don't have to start D-Fend, you don't have to type anything.
You must simply click on your Stonekeep shortcut on your desktop and enjoy the game!
Good luck!
